Remove accents from letters

Paste your text, press Remove accents, and copy the plain version. Café becomes Cafe, São Paulo becomes Sao Paulo, Dvořák becomes Dvorak.

How the accent remover works

Every accented letter in Unicode can be split into a base letter and a separate mark. The tool splits each letter (a process called NFD normalisation), deletes the marks, and keeps the base letters. Letters that are their own shapes rather than a letter plus a mark are spelled out by hand.

When removing accents is a bad idea

Accents carry meaning. In Spanish, año (year) and ano are very different words, and in French où (where) and ou (or) are too. Keep accents in anything a person will read. Strip them only for machine fields such as file names, web addresses and systems that reject non-English characters.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored.

What happens to letters like ß, æ and ø?

Letters that are not an accent plus a base letter are spelled out: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, œ becomes oe, ø becomes o, ł becomes l, đ becomes d and þ becomes th.

Why remove accents at all?

Some systems only accept plain A to Z: older databases, file names, web addresses (slugs), usernames, airline bookings and some payment forms. Removing accents keeps the text readable while making it safe for those systems.
