How to Type E With an Accent on Any Keyboard

To type é on Windows, hold Alt and type 0233 on the number pad. On a Mac, press Option + E, then e. In Microsoft Word, press Ctrl + ' (apostrophe), then e.

The letter e takes more accents than any other vowel. This guide gives the keys for all eight common forms, shows which languages use each, and helps you pick the right one.

Alt codes need the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. The top-row numbers do not work.

For ē, ė, ę and ě there is no Windows Alt code. Press Win + . (period), open the Symbols tab and pick the letter, or click it on our e with accent page, which lists every e variant ready to copy.

In English, é shows up in borrowed words such as café, résumé and fiancé. ë appears in a few names and words like Zoë and Noël, where it shows the e is said as its own syllable.

How to type e with an accent on Windows

Alt codes. Turn on Num Lock, hold Alt, type the four-digit code on the number pad and release Alt. Alt 0233 gives é.

Win + . (period). Opens the emoji panel. Click the Symbols tab and find e in the Latin symbols list. This is the easiest route on a laptop without a number pad.

US International keyboard. Press ' then e for é, ` then e for è, ^ then e for ê and " then e for ë. Right Alt + e also gives é.

How to type e with an accent on a Mac

Option shortcuts. Press the combination, release it, then press e. Option + E gives the acute, Option + ` the grave, Option + I the circumflex and Option + U the diaeresis.

Press and hold. Hold down the e key. A menu appears with è, é, ê, ë and several less common forms such as ē and ę. Press the number shown under the letter you want, or click it.

ABC Extended. For ē and ě, add the ABC Extended input source in keyboard settings. It adds dead keys for macrons and carons, such as Option + A, then e for ē.

Character Viewer. Press Control + Command + Space, search "e caron" or "e macron" and double-click the result.

How to type e with an accent in Word

Word for Windows has its own shortcuts that work without a number pad:

  1. Press Ctrl + ' (apostrophe) and release.
  2. Press e.
  3. You get é.

Swap the first combination for Ctrl + ` (è), Ctrl + Shift + ^ (ê) or Ctrl + Shift + : (ë). For ē, ė, ę and ě, type the hex code from the table above and press Alt + X. Word turns 011B into ě.

On iPhone and Android

Press and hold the e key on the on-screen keyboard. A row of accented e letters pops up. Slide your finger to the one you want and lift. This works the same way on iPhone, Gboard and Samsung Keyboard.

On a Chromebook and in Google Docs

On a Chromebook, press Ctrl + Shift + U, type e9 and press Space to get é. In Google Docs on any computer, open Insert, then Special characters, and search "e acute".

What is the Alt code for é?
